Bisaya terms of endearment: langga, pangga, and friends
What Cebuano pet names actually mean — and who you can call what.
If you’ve heard a Cebuano couple talk, you’ve heard langga. Most Bisaya pet names grow from one beautiful root: palangga, “to cherish, to treat as precious.” From it come langga, ga, pangga, gang — all roughly “dear/babe,” all heard a hundred times a day in Cebu and Davao homes.
LanggaThe classic pet name — “love,” “dear.” Short for palangga.
GaEven shorter — the everyday “babe.”
Pangga / GangSame family: “beloved.” Pick one; couples usually settle on their own.
Palangga ko ikawI cherish you / you are precious to me.
Gihigugma tikaI love you — the deep, serious one.
Gimingaw ko nimoI miss you.
Akong gugmaMy love (gugma is the noun “love”).
Ikaw akong kinabuhiYou are my life. Reserve for full drama.
UyabBoyfriend/girlfriend — “Naa koy uyab” means “I’m taken.”
MahalAlso used for “dear/love” — borrowed from Tagalog, common in mixed couples.

Bisaya is rich in warm, teasing address between friends and strangers — using these correctly instantly makes you sound local.
Bai / BayBuddy, mate — between men especially. “Salamat, bai!”
BesBestie — playful, any gender.
Day / IndayAffectionate address for a girl or younger woman — waitresses, nieces, daughters.
Dong / DodongThe male counterpart — for a boy or younger man.
Migo / MigaFriend (male / female), from Spanish amigo/amiga.
Two things surprise learners. First, day and dong are affectionate, not condescending — a grandmother calling you dong is being sweet. Second, many Bisaya couples say “I love you” in English for everyday moments and save gihigugma tika for when they really mean it. Using the Bisaya version carries weight — which is exactly why it lands.
